Avoiding Mosquitoes On Your Vacation
Spring Break is right around the corner, then soon after that it’s Summer time. These are always great times for a get-a-way-, and some much-needed relaxation and nice weather! Unfortunately, there is one insect that is waiting to spoil your vacation, the mosquito. Thankfully, there are several things we have listed below that you can do to help deter these unwanted pests.
Avoid Mosquito Hotspots
If you are not sure where the mosquito hotspots might be, a quick Google search for either “mosquito hotspots” or even hotspots for diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, and zika.
Remove Any Standing Water
Check for any containers around your hotel/cabin/camp site for any standing water and remove the water if possible. Also, remembering to empty the water out of glasses, mugs, cups, and buckets can help to deter mosquitoes as ALL mosquitoes are attracted to standing water.
Use Insect Repellent
It’s always a good idea to apply insect repellent before leaving your hotel, condo, or cabin. Even more so if you are planning to be out during the later parts of the day. Apply as needed to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, and always follow the product label instructions carefully.
Avoid Certain Times of the Day
To avoid mosquitoes, planning any outdoor activities you might have during the times of day when mosquitoes are less active is going to be your best bet. Generally, mosquitoes are more active at dusk and dawn. These times of the day tend to be cooler and less windy which make conditions more favorable mosquitoes.
Wear Appropriate Clothing
Wearing lightly colored clothing is a good way to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes as mosquitoes are more attracted to dark colors. Try to avoid bright colors, as this can attract other insects like bees and wasps – whites, neutrals, and pastels are your best bet. Also, try to wear loose fitting light weight clothing items – long sleeves are great, but it’s understandable that long sleeves might not be practical in certain climates, and you definitely do not want to sweat. Sweat (lactic-acid), is one of the main attractants for mosquitoes.
Keep Air Circulated
Mosquitoes are very weak fliers, so having something as simple as a small fan around you or a strong ceiling fan can also help to keep mosquitoes away. If you are in an environment that is already pretty windy, then you shouldn’t have to worry about any mosquitoes or other small flying insects.
Use an Insect Net
You can never go wrong with an insect net. These nets can be very beneficial in mosquito hot spots – swamps, jungles, mountains, and anywhere that has a tropical climate.
