Whether you are firing up the grille or lounging around on the deck, your backyard has the potential to be a great relaxation area. However, the presence of mosquitoes can definitely ruin the experience of being outdoors. Don’t allow these known disease carriers to put a damper on your fun. Here are some tips to keep mosquitoes from invading your backyard.
Eliminate Stagnant Water
These bloodsuckers thrive in standing water. It is the perfect habit for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. A single mud puddle can spawn hundreds of mosquitoes. After a rainstorm, be sure to check for sources of stagnant water such as buckets and flower pots. To prevent your gutters from becoming clogged, clean them a few times throughout the year.
Burn Citronella Candles
Mosquitoes despise the smell of citronella. If you plan to be outdoors during the warmer months, place a few citronella candles around your backyard. They are especially helpful when hosting family gatherings and cookouts.
Plant Certain Flowers
Like citronella, marigolds and rosemary can help ward off mosquitoes. Catnip also emits a scent that mosquitoes hate. Planting them around the perimeter of your yard will provide an extra barrier of protection. It is also a good idea to place these flowers near the porch.
Use a Portable Fan
If you tend hang out on your deck a lot, a fan can be used as an extra weapon against mosquitoes. These insects do not have the ability to fly in a strong breeze. While relaxing on the deck, don’t hesitate to surround yourself with a couple of portable fans.
Don’t Keep Garbage Cans in the Backyard
